Your Website Is Live. Now What?
By Dale West,
So, you have built a website and are wondering why your business has not taken off yet. Even a great-looking website will not generate leads on its own. To help people find your business online, there are a few essential steps you should take after launch. If you hired someone to build your website, make sure these items are part of their process.
Step 1: Set Up Google Search Console
Start by telling Google about your website through Google Search Console. This free tool helps you verify ownership of your site, monitor search performance, and submit your sitemap.
You can verify your website by adding a DNS record, placing a META tag on your site, or using another approved verification method. Once your site is verified, submit your sitemap so Google can better understand and index your pages.
Step 2: Set Up Bing Webmaster Tools
While Google is the largest search engine, Bing should not be ignored. Bing powers search results across Microsoft products and can still send valuable traffic to your website.
Bing Webmaster Tools works much like Google Search Console. You will need to verify ownership of your website, often by uploading an XML file, adding a META tag, or using a DNS record. After verification, submit your sitemap to help Bing discover and index your pages.
Step 3: Claim Your Local Business Listings
If your business serves a local market, your next step is to set up or claim your Google Business Profile and Bing Places for Business listing. These profiles help your business appear in local search results, map listings, and “near me” searches.
Accurate business listings make it easier for potential customers to find your location, call your business, visit your website, read reviews, and learn more about your services.
Make Your Website Easier to Find
Launching your website is only the beginning. By setting up Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Google Business Profile, and Bing Places for Business, you give your website a stronger foundation for visibility in search results.
These steps will not guarantee overnight success, but they help search engines find your site, understand your content, and connect your business with people who are already looking for what you offer.
