The most common type is an XML sitemap. This file lists the URLs you want search engines to discover and crawl. Think of it as a roadmap that helps search engine crawlers find important pages more efficiently.

However, a sitemap does not guarantee that every page will be indexed or ranked. Search engines still evaluate page quality, accessibility, relevance, duplicate content, technical issues, and other ranking factors before deciding what appears in search results.

Not every page belongs in a sitemap. Login pages, thank-you pages, internal search results, form confirmation pages, and duplicate or low-value pages are usually better left out. For pages you definitely do not want indexed, use the proper noindex settings rather than relying on sitemap exclusion alone.

What Should an XML Sitemap Include?

A good XML sitemap should include the canonical URLs of the pages you want search engines to consider. In most cases, that includes your homepage, main service pages, location pages, important blog posts, contact page, and other useful public content.

XML sitemaps can also include helpful details such as:

  • Last Modified Date: The lastmod tag tells search engines when a page was last updated. This can help crawlers understand which pages have changed.
  • Canonical URLs: Your sitemap should list the preferred version of each page, not every duplicate version.
  • Image Information: Image sitemaps can help search engines discover images that may not be easy to find through normal crawling, especially images loaded through JavaScript.
  • Video Information: Websites with important video content may benefit from video sitemap data to help search engines understand the videos on each page.

Older sitemap fields such as changefreq and priority may still appear in some sitemap generators, but they should not be treated as a magic lever for SEO. Google has stated that it ignores those values, so your effort is better spent keeping your sitemap accurate, current, and focused on quality URLs.

Creating and Uploading a Sitemap

Creating a sitemap does not have to be complicated. Many content management systems and website platforms can generate one automatically. For small static websites, a sitemap can also be created manually or with a sitemap generator.

The standard XML sitemap is commonly named sitemap.xml and placed in the root directory of your website. For example:

https://www.yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml

Once the sitemap is uploaded, submit it through Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. You can also reference the sitemap in your robots.txt file so crawlers can find it more easily.

Submitting a sitemap is not a guarantee that every URL will be indexed, but it is a strong technical best practice. It helps search engines discover your important content, find updates, and identify possible sitemap errors.

HTML Sitemaps for Usability

An XML sitemap is primarily for search engines. An HTML sitemap is for people.

An HTML sitemap is a regular web page, often named sitemap.html, that lists important pages on your site in an organized format. It can help visitors find what they need, especially on larger websites with many services, locations, products, blog posts, or resources.

A well-built HTML sitemap can also strengthen your internal linking structure. That helps both users and search engine crawlers move through your site more easily.

The Benefits of Sitemaps

Sitemaps can help your website in several ways:

  • They help search engines discover important pages.
  • They make it easier for crawlers to recognize updates.
  • They help clarify which URLs are the preferred versions.
  • They support better crawling for large, new, or frequently updated websites.
  • They can improve visitor navigation when paired with an HTML sitemap.

Sitemaps are especially useful for websites with many pages, new websites with few backlinks, websites with large archives, or sites that rely heavily on images or video.

Sitemaps are not a shortcut to instant rankings, but they are an important part of a healthy website. An XML sitemap helps search engines discover and understand your content, while an HTML sitemap helps visitors find their way around.

For the best results, keep your sitemap accurate, include only useful public pages, submit it through webmaster tools, and update it when your website changes. Combined with strong content, clean navigation, technical SEO, and regular maintenance, a well-structured sitemap can support a more effective online presence.
